And we are off

Finally, our Korea visas have come though. After a long wait of two weeks Libby and I have received the OK & are ready to take off on Tuesday morning- woop woop! Libby is talking too much so I (Dan) has taken control of this posting.
BLA BLA BLA. THE END Hold on she has taken over AGAIN!
So we are at the cottage this weekend with my parents and family friends Wendy & Chris and hopefully we will get packed & tie up our loose ends on Sunday night & Monday AND squeeze in a lunch with Ashley and Stu.
It's been so great to catch up with everyone in the T.O. area - Melinda and Matt, Sabrina, Jenn, Laura, Elana, Benson, Lindsay, Emily and Libby's family- & put faces to the names of each other's old friends.
We will miss you all and will send news as soon as possible when we arrive in Daejon. Wish us luck!
Love Libby and Dan

In Toronto

We are in Toronto until next Thursday, August 23rd, providing our visa comes through by then. It appears that the Immigration Office in Korea is taking their sweet time with our documents, but we're crossing our fingers that our visa issuance number will arrive tonight or tomorrow. Until then, we're visiting with family & friends here and heading out to Laura's brother's wedding on Saturday for a much-anticipated reunion with our favourite Brusselite. We would love to see any & all in Toronto, so give us a call or an e-mail if you are in town!

Little Change of Plans

Soooo we've decided to make a fairly significant change of plans - or rather, we decided to do so last week- when we postponed our cross-canada journey in Ontario (to be continued at a later time, perhaps on the way back from Korea). Dan and I were feeling a little overwhelmed with the time restraints as we would have to be in B.C. by the 13th to process our visas, which would require driving from my cottage to Vancouver in about 6 days - not the leisurely, frequently-stopping, see-as-much-as-possible kind of journey that we were planning on. SO when we stopped in Quebec city after seeing Tim in New Brunswick, we took our time to see the sights, including a huge parade celebrating New France as it was in the 1700's. We went on to Ottawa to see Emily & family, and the magnificent Museum of Civilization. On Friday night, we felt like we were back in Nova Scotia again while partying with Emilio in the beer tent at the Highland Games in Glengarry. I don't think I've ever had so much beer poured on me, and still left happy. We spent the last week at my cottage near Bancroft, Ontario, relaxing and doing pretty much whatever we wanted Dan had his first water-ski and made blueberry pie! Needless to say, he is becoming much more popular with the Lavelle family!
Today we are off (with a sad good-bye to my favourite place in the world) and on to Georgian Bay to see Lizard, then up to Sundridge to visit my Aunt Penny & family. I promise to post pictures soon, we are missing everyone and hope you are having a wonderful summer wherever you may be!

What we did in Korea...

  • Adopted a cocker spaniel/teddy bear mix named Sundae
  • Bought a '97 Kia Aveila, a well-loved standard with some serious key designs on the sides (which Libby is learning how to drive, courtesy of teacher Dan)
  • Coated ourselves & Soonday in mud (and loved it!) at the Daecheon Beach Mud Festival
  • Developed a serious kimbap addiction (Libby)
  • Discovered "hohta", a delicious syrup-filled pancake sold on the street
  • Enjoyed the changing colours at Gyeryongsan National Park
  • Explored a few of the sights of Seoul
  • Explored King Muryeong's Tomb in Gongju
  • Had a fabulous multi-national Christmas Eve party
  • Imbibed numerous potent long-island iced teas at Daejeon's "Lucky Strike" bar
  • Learned how to direct a Taxi in Korean
  • Learned how to read Korean...mostly
  • Ran a 10-k race (Dan), and training for more
  • Taking a pottery class (Libby)
  • Tasted deep-fried ginseng (not recommended)!
  • Visited Tim in Pohang, and ate dinner with a Japanese monk in Gyeongju
  • Watched a Daejeon Citizen's Football match
  • Went dancing at "Bubi Bubi" a slightly less sleazy Korean version of Halifax's Palace
  • Went skating and ruled the rink
  • Went swimming at Daechon Beach (while all the Koreans wore winter clothes)
