Some snapshots of Daejeon: our kitchen, tiny buddhas at the Donghaksa temple and Dan and I at Nammaetap - a pagoda in nearby Gyeryongsan National Park - with our friends Erin and Young Been. Also: a toddler's parallel parking job, our neighbourhood dog and me with Erin and Amber (co-workers) at Santa's, a popular foreigner bar in the city

Daejeon

So we are here....actually have been here in Daejeon for about 2 1/2 weeks. It's going really well - the apartment is fantastic and way bigger than we imagined, the other teachers are lots of fun and the city is great. Daejeon is just big enough to have a good little party scene and small enough that we can navigate it relatively easily by subway. Too bad we can't read any signs or talk to any locals yet - Dan and I have both developed some excellent skills in charades though. When looking for bananas at the local convenience store, Dan did a fantastic job of mimicking a chimp peeling a banana - complete with noises and underarm scratching. To my amusement, the Korean word was....banana.
So...we are enjoying ourselves, school has been keeping us busy (the kids are not as prim and proper as we imagined, in fact some are definitely ADD...)but we have a holiday next week. We have five days off for Korean Thanksgiving or 'Chuseok' so we'll have a chance to check out the region a little more and perhaps make a stop at the local hot baths/spa. Ahhh...life is tough.
Miss you all, looking forward to hearing from you soon!

What we did in Korea...

  • Adopted a cocker spaniel/teddy bear mix named Sundae
  • Bought a '97 Kia Aveila, a well-loved standard with some serious key designs on the sides (which Libby is learning how to drive, courtesy of teacher Dan)
  • Coated ourselves & Soonday in mud (and loved it!) at the Daecheon Beach Mud Festival
  • Developed a serious kimbap addiction (Libby)
  • Discovered "hohta", a delicious syrup-filled pancake sold on the street
  • Enjoyed the changing colours at Gyeryongsan National Park
  • Explored a few of the sights of Seoul
  • Explored King Muryeong's Tomb in Gongju
  • Had a fabulous multi-national Christmas Eve party
  • Imbibed numerous potent long-island iced teas at Daejeon's "Lucky Strike" bar
  • Learned how to direct a Taxi in Korean
  • Learned how to read Korean...mostly
  • Ran a 10-k race (Dan), and training for more
  • Taking a pottery class (Libby)
  • Tasted deep-fried ginseng (not recommended)!
  • Visited Tim in Pohang, and ate dinner with a Japanese monk in Gyeongju
  • Watched a Daejeon Citizen's Football match
  • Went dancing at "Bubi Bubi" a slightly less sleazy Korean version of Halifax's Palace
  • Went skating and ruled the rink
  • Went swimming at Daechon Beach (while all the Koreans wore winter clothes)
